I think you can’t do better than to read the original classic Dracula by Bram Stoker. In fact, you can read it online http://www.online-literature.com/stoker/dracula/ or here http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/345 You can get some useful ideas from it concerning vampires and their habits, and then incorporate some of your own original ideas.

I’d suggest that you set your story in a very normal looking place instead of the usual moody, atmospheric location. You could even have your vampires liking the sun; vampires having a problem with the sun being an old-wives’ tale. Change things around and add to your heart’s content.

    Enjoy!

    1. decide on how they turn to one like being bitten in the old stories. in the newer versions it is a retro virus of the blood
    2. decide who is the most powerful in the coven and why was he/she created. ann rice showed one of the best creations of a vampire where it was a spirit being that happened to taste blood and became avampire, others because they went against GOD
    3. deceide their grouping involve all countries not just the west research a little on vampiric lore from the diff continents, how the coven is formed in diff. countries
    4. decide on intimate relationships – other novelists decided vampires cant make babies and have sex by blood exchange- other vampires are graphically having sex
5.decide on their super powers – flying, dead-speak(speaking to dead), foretell future, blood memory,
    6. think of a human hero or vampiric hero who saves humanity by making some spectacular gadget or a blood genetic trait that makes him imune to vampires etc.
    7. setting is it modern day or in the past during knghts or in ancient culture of blood worshippers, is it a flashback etc

    i’m out of ideas
    lol hope it helps^^

YOu need to read Dracula by Bram Stoker. He created the genre. He set down the very specific set of guidelines by which a vampire can and cannot operate – and for a very specific reason. He wanted vampires to have no free will – and to live under very stringent rules that they must struggle against to survive. It is all about survival – not twinkling in sunlight. Read Stoker and you will understand.
