It was nothing more than a knee-jerk reaction she had, just like smelling flowers or food. Dried plant material tends to lose its fragrance. Dried roses don't smell either unless you treat them with fragrance oil. Think of all the dried material they make potpourri out of. It doesn't smell when it's dried.
