How far in the books does the first season of Vampire Diaries go?

I’m busy watching the first season of Vampire Diaries. I just recently bought the first book but I don’t want to spoil the show as I’m really enjoying it.
So I was basically wondering how far the first season of the show goes up to in the books.
I tried to google it but there were too many spoilers!

I wouldn’t worry too much about reading the books. The tv show only uses the books as guideline, the story is much different from the books. I have to say, honestly, that up till now I only read the two first books, they don’t appeal to me as much as the tv show does. I think the story on tv is much better then in the books.
Don’t worry about spoling the show at all. I brought the book and during the hiatus after The Turning oint and I read it. Its NOTHING like the show at all. I remember hearing from Kev and Julie that they really try to deviate the book from the show because they are trying to make it more modern (since the book was made more then 10 years ago). I would say book 1- 1/2 of book 2 is safe to read without any spoilers. Also, the writers also use some information from the recent books to incorporate in some episodes. (I.e Wickery Bridge mention was from book 4 or 5) So basically don’t worry about reading the book that would spoil the show because right now there is nothing/little similarties from the book to the show.
